The Empire Strikes Back
Notes:
Constantine inherited an empire divided into two parts.
He reunited the two parts of the empire.
He builds a new center of the empire, Constantinople, the City of Constantine.
There is a large Christian presence in the empire.
He is a ruthless(cruel) dictator(ruler).
He killed his son, his step-son, and his second wife.
The city only had one aqueduct(water channel). The people were dying of thirst.
The city needed a water system larger than Rome's.
This fell to Valens who reigned from 364-378 AD.
It brought water a distance of 400 miles from Thrace.

He tried to regain the bygone glory of ancient Rome.
He reclaimed lost western territories.
The Hippodrome was the center of life in Constantinople.
532, Nica Riot, at the Hippodrome of the Blues and Greens left a third of the city in ashes.

The gates are locked and the Imperial army kills 30,000 people.

It was dedicated in 536.
It became the centerpiece of Christianity.
Under Justinian the empire grew to its largest size.
Three emperors would rule after Justinian deaths.

986 Samuels defeats Basil. He was only eighteen and walked into an ambush.

Basil's army was unstoppable.
He returns to fight Bulgaria. He destroys there infrastructure.
1014 July 29, Basil launched a surprise attack conquering the Bulgarians and capturing 14,000 men.
He blinded everyone, leaving every 100th with one eye to lead the others back home.
