Can you imagine spaghetti without tomatoes? Chocolate without sugar? Pizza without cheese? In 1492, most of the foods we identify with particular cuisines--Italian tomato and cheese pizza, French chocolate mousse, and Indian curries spiced with chilies--were impossible to make because the ingredients existed only in either the Old World or the New World. Look at a recipe from a food you are familiar with. (i.e. pizza, spaghetti, etc.) List the ingredients used to make the dish.
By using a world map and pictures of ingredients (from cans, magazines, newspapers, etc.) tape or glue the pictures to a world map to show where the food originated. Mark on the map the route that a person would have had to take to create the same dish in 1492.

Extra Credit: Create a comic strip depicting the journey required to collect the ingredients to make a dish.

HW # What is it worth?

Think about the world around you. What is considered to be a valuable item? Why?

1. Prepare a list of four pairs of items whose value might change as the circumstances change. Sample list: a wool sweater and a faddish T-shirt; a tuna fish sandwich and a pack of chewing gum; a flashlight and a glow stick; two quarters and a dollar bill. Select one item from each pair that you would prefer to have.
2. Which one do you think is the most valuable? The least valuable? Who would/would not think each of the items is of value?
3. Use a  camera/camera phone to take pictures of things in your home/neighborhood that are valuable? Why do they have value? What would have to change for the items not to be valuable?
4.  What has the most value? Why? Does everyone agree? What do you think had the most value 500 years ago?
